What You LOSE When AI Does Your Creative Work

Imagine hiring every all-star on the market, paying top dollar, and then finishing sixth in your division. That’s not a hypothetical. It’s what happened to Sinan Aral’s beloved Liverpool F.C. last season, and it’s also, he argues, an almost perfect metaphor for how most organizations are deploying AI right now. Aral is a professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and one of the leading researchers on human-AI collaboration. His lab has spent the last several years running large-scale, real-wo

Unitree's New Robot Looks Like a TRANSFORMER — And It Actually TRANSFORMS

On May 12, Unitree Robotics founder Wang Xingxing climbed into the chest cavity of a 9.8-foot-tall metal robot, walked around, and destroyed a concrete brick wall. One punch. Wall gone. The Chinese media reaction was instant: “Unitree really built a ‘Gundam’!” That was a wild exaggeration, but there’s a kernel of truth to it. The GD01 feels like the first version of something much bigger. Not in size, but in scope. China is waging a full-spectrum push into embodied AI—“digital brains” with phys

The Five Skills That Will MATTER Most in the AI Age

For most of the last century, we believed human potential could be measured through intelligence, and we built whole institutions around that belief. IQ was the metric. If you were analytical enough, technically proficient enough, quick enough on your feet, doors opened, schools rewarded it, employers screened for it, and entire industries grew up around identifying and elevating it. Then we noticed what intelligence alone couldn’t do. Technical brilliance without humanity tended to create dista

The Internet's MEMORY Is 30 Years Old — Can It Survive What's Coming NEXT?

If you were to travel back in time to 1996 with a 2TB thumb drive, you’d be able to fit the entire World Wide Web on it. Of course, that kind of storage didn’t exist in the ’90s, so it’s never been that simple for the Internet Archive. The nonprofit site, which launched three decades ago this year, went from making copies of the web on tape drives to storing more than 1 trillion pages worth of Internet history at data centers around the world. Using its Wayback Machine, anyone can look back to w

Because the 37-person startup Krea is releasing its first generative AI model as the design tools startup repositions itself as a full-fledged AI research lab.  The move is significant for Krea, but it also seems to tease an almost inevitable moment in the rapidly evolving AI market, where smaller players in the industry can make more disruptive bets.  On one hand, Krea can hardly call itself a bootstrapped startup anymore. Why Building Your Own App Just Got RIDICULOUSLY Easy

The tyranny of software is almost over. Since the first computer programmers wrote the first computer programs, we, the users of that software, have been forced to live in the worlds those programs create. The features are the features. The design is the design. Want something else, something better? Learn to code, I guess. Until now, the people making a given piece of software - mostly well-paid professional developers - have rarely been the same as the ones using it: lawyers, doctors, churches

The Viewfinder That Turns Your Action Cam Into a RETRO Shooter

How Dell Is DESTROYING the Alienware Brand

I remember a time when Alienware refused to make a thinner laptop - the company didn't want to compromise on its builds. But today, Dell is slapping the Alienware name on a piece of hardware that sounds utterly watered down. It's partly RAMageddon's fault. How AI Scrapers Turned Stealing Content Into a BUSINESS

There are several dimensions to the ongoing legal war between the media industry and AI companies over copyright, and one of the major ones is the question of outputs. The 1980s Paradox That Predicts AI's Next EXPLOSIVE Leap

There’s an old joke among economists that goes like this: “You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.” I didn’t say it was a funny joke. But when labor economist Robert Solow originally wrote those words in 1987, they were certainly true. Personal computers, corporate mainframes, and the first vestiges of the modern internet were all anyone could talk about.  Yet productivity wasn’t budging. The Breast Cancer Survivor Who Ran From Her Fears by EMBRACING Everything

Most comedies rely on a certain amount of established tropes: the obsessive best friend, the stereotyped psychotherapist, the randy 20-year-old. Besides offering comfort, this kind of familiarity can function like a reassuring blanket wrapped around such potentially discomforting issues as female sexuality, the Grim Reaper and what it means to be a 40-year-old woman trying to […]

'Parallel Tales' Review: Isabelle Huppert Spies Across the Street in Farhadi's Muddled Voyeuristic Game

It’s all about people spying on each other, which can be a good idea for a movie. And no one is saying that Farhadi has to stick to his familiar mode of neorealist drama.
